Wilkes-Barre Church vandalized | Eyewitness News
WILKES-BARRE, ALZERNE COUNTY (WBRE / WYOU-TV) – People who broke into a local church may have committed a federal crime by desecrating the Bible and the American flag.
“It was difficult to understand how anyone could do something like this in a place of worship,” said Pastor Andy Jerome.
On June 7, several people broke into the church, causing extensive damage. There was human excrement spread over the American flag, the Bible was torn to shreds, and several fire extinguishers were discharged throughout the building.
Wilkes Bar Municipal Police are still looking for vandals. On Monday, Acting U.S. Attorney Bruce Brandler spoke of the seriousness of their actions.
He said in a statement: “This activity is not only heinous but also potentially constitutes a serious federal crime,” Brandler said, said the FBI was ready to investigate.
“I’m pretty happy that they are chasing him because we don’t know exactly who did it. As a church, we have already decided to forgive them, but we also understand that we don’t want them to continue to do this type of damage to other churches or other properties, ”said the pastor. Jerome.
Jérôme says the parishioners were hurt by the crime. On Sunday, he told them it was a test of their faith, an opportunity to practice what they preach.
Jerome says they try to focus on the blessings, “We have had overwhelming support from our local community and our government officials. It really blew me away.
The church also received donations to cover repairs and install a security system.
