By Stanley Uzoaru, Owerri
The newly installed Catholic Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Owerri, His Grace, Bishop Lucius Ugorji has urged all gladiators in Imo State to sheath their swords and embrace peace to carry the state forward.
Ugorji who said this during his installation to replace the outgoing Archbishop of Owerri, Anthony Obinna, noted on Thursday that with peace the state will surely grow.
He said: “In the face of the mirage of problems plaguing our society today, we extend the hand of partnership with the government to work for the development of our people while bearing in mind that there is a complex relationship between the peace and sustainable development.
“Peace is the foundation of development. There is no sustainable development without peace, peace takes root when people are freed from hunger, poverty, unemployment, repression and exploitation, we must work together to save our people from the prevailing scourge of violence and insecurity that has caused unimaginable grief, trauma and suffering. fear to our fellow citizens in the state. Ugorji said.
He however added “Therefore, I call upon the gladiators of the state to sheathe their swords for violence begets violence, I implore you to turn your swords into ploughshares. Rather than engaging in senseless conflicts that lead to wanton bloodshed, mutual self-destruction and destruction of property, I urge you to set aside all contention, division and rancor for progress of our state.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Hope Uzodimma urged the newly installed provincial leader to prepare for his new office, recalling the greatest task ahead.
“Our new Archbishop, His Grace Lucius Ugorji, allow me to humbly remind you of the obvious, much is expected of you. As you know, the divine office of the Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Owerri is the seat spirituality of Catholics in Imo and Abia States.
“It means that many of the faithful Catholics in these states and beyond are looking to your new office for their spiritual welfare.
“Also, you are taking over at a time when the nation seems to be at a crossroads. Sadly, we are witnessing the highest level of youth insecurity and unrest than ever before. We are also witnessing the aftermath of a global pandemic and economic hardship that continues to test the faith of many citizens of the country.
Bidding farewell to the outgoing Archbishop, Uzodimma said, “Without a doubt, His Grace, Archbishop AJ V Obinna leaves the Church he inherited in 1994, a bigger and stronger organization that responds better to the spiritual needs of the people.
“Through his aggressive style of evangelism, under his leadership, the ecclesiastical province of Owerri witnessed the planting of parishes on the doorsteps of many of the faithful. It is also recorded that he faced many battles and weathered many storms during his tenure.
“So the outgoing Archbishop can be compared to Saint Paul in many ways. Therefore, I dare to say to Your Grace, Archbishop Obinna: “You have fought a good fight, and you have finished the race”. May I join the rest of the church in wishing you the best of retirements. Uzodimma said.
