“Metaverse is about seeing things in a more integrated way”
While some doubt the metaverse will be able to take off or see it as another marketing strategy, others seem to believe this is the next giant leap in information technology.
Regardless of the perceptual divide, Kim Beom-joo, head of evangelism at graphic developer Unity Korea, says the coming of the virtual platform was inevitable and that its arrival means a shift to text-oriented communication.
“The difference (of the metaverse) from the different kinds of digital services that we already had is that it allows us to see things that we previously couldn’t see through visualization and embodiment. The metaverse allows us to see things in a more integrated way and this leads to more productive and efficient work, ”Kim told the Korea Herald on Nov. 29 in an interview.
Unity, headquartered in the United States, operates the world’s most widely used 3D graphics development platform. More than 70 percent of the world’s top 1,000 mobile games were created using Unity engines, according to the company.
“Unity started with the motto of democratizing games, but recently our focus has grown into democratizing the metaverse. Our goal is to help people who create content using our technologies in the metaverse space,” said Kim said.
Two of South Korea’s most well-known metavers – ifland from SK Telecom and Zepeto from Naver – were created using Unity engines.
As part of efforts to enable wider use of the technology needed by the 3D world, Unity announced in November its intention to acquire the Weta Digital visual effects powerhouse. Weta Digital is known for its tools used in award-winning productions such as Avatar, Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones.
With the combination of state-of-the-art visual effects tools from Weta Digital and Unity platforms, Unity said the acquisition aims to help creators and artists around the world shape the future metaverse in a more creative way. .
Kim pointed out that more and more industries are turning to visualization of their work process instead of the text-oriented approach, regardless of the metaverse, because it is beneficial to them.
“By transforming online spaces into realistic spaces, companies are seeing an increase in the number of instances where the workforce and businesses from different industries are integrating. Before (the metaverse), we thought that technologies were developed in separate ways. Now we can think that they can all be connected to create an online world, ”he said.
“I think we planted a flag somewhere in the distance. I think it’s significant that we have a goal line.”
