Mesa Church hosts special Memorial Day event to honor fallen service members
MESA, Ariz. – A memorial tribute and concert were held at Apache Wells Community Church in Mesa on May 31, as Arizona and the rest of the country pay their respects to fallen service men and women on Memorial Day.
More than 200 American flags cover the memorial site, enveloping the entire church. Each flag represents a person from the congregation who served in the military.
“I am here because hundreds of thousands of people are not here,” said Thomas Doc Holiday, who is an Army veteran, He served during the conflict in Vietnam.
For the holidays, every day is Memorial Day.
“I walk around congratulating the other vets,” Holiday said. “Ordinary people have no idea of the trials and tribulations of service, even in peacetime.”
“If we don’t remember the story, we forget it, especially the service,” said Katie Evans, who is the pastor of the church. “Remembrance Day is for those who have died, lost their lives or served their country, and we have a good half of our members who have served, or their spouses have served and have passed away.”
