Jack Dorsey reflects on his role in centralizing the internet and despairs

Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey might now spend his days as Block CEO and “professional friend of Jay-Z”, but before taking up his blockchain evangelism full-time, he was a big shot in the social media – and he regrets it.

Dorsey admitted on weekends that it played a role in centralizing the internet in a few social media platforms, and the change has not been good.

Regret – Jack Dorsey posted the following surprisingly candid tweet on Saturday, April 2:

Dorsey thinks the internet used to be more open and exciting. “The days of usenet, IRC, the Web… even email (with PGP)… were amazing,” Dorsey writes. “The centralization of discovery and identity in enterprises has really damaged the internet.”

The centralization he refers to is the rise of social media platforms. Since their individual launches, Facebook and Twitter have not only become the de facto homepages of many Internet users. They have also helped – along with app stores – to abstract from the central metaphor of the web. Why go to a website when you can get news, entertainment and talk to your friends all in one app? As the creator of Twitter, Dorsey is directly responsible for some of this change.

“Centralization discovery and identity in companies really damaged the Internet.”

Decentralization — It’s important not to overstate Twitter’s influence – it’s not as big or widespread as Facebook, which has a user base in the billions. But it has positioned itself as a key part of the information ecosystem. If you want to follow an event as it unfolds, there’s probably a Twitter feed for it. Journalists insist on the influence of the platform because at some point we all decided it was going to be our personal hell, but it still shapes the conversation online to some degree.

Dorsey’s comments seem unusual because he benefited financially from the problem he believes Twitter helped create, but they are not without merit. Part of Block’s mission (apart from having a great website) is to make financial services and decentralized technology more accessible to the average person. Perhaps Jack can atone for the sins of the past by making Block the largest and most easily accessible provider of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies. A sort of central one-stop-shop for all things decentralized. What could go wrong?
