SYDNEY (AP) – Ons Jabeur retired injured in his Sydney Classic quarter-final on Thursday, allowing Anett Kontaveit to advance to the semi-finals.

Fourth-seeded Kontaveit advanced when seventh-seeded Jabeur retired with a lower back injury after losing the opening set 6-4.

After nearly an hour on the pitch, Jabeur received a post-set medical time-out and attempted to start the second set. But after serving a let and a first serve foul, the Tunisian went to the net for a late-game hug. She is ninth seed for the Australian Open next week.

“I really hope Ons will be fine for next week and that it’s not too bad,” said Kontaveit. “The first set was really competitive and we’ve had tough games before, but she always came out on top. I was really happy to have the set and to play the way I played.

Trying to reach a fourth consecutive final, Kontaveit advanced to a semi-final against third seed Barbora Krejcikova, who defeated Caroline Garcia of France 6-0, 6-2.

In two matches, Krejcikova lost eight matches.

In the men’s tournament in Sydney, former number one Andy Murray, playing on a wild card, advanced to the semi-finals when eighth seed David Goffin retired early in the second set. Murray won the first set 6-2 in 50 minutes.

At Adelaide International, former US Open champion Marin Cilic beat American Tommy Paul 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 and reached the semi-finals for the second week in a row.

In a game of good servers, Cilic served 14 aces to Paul’s eights and won 84% of his first serve points.

Third seed Karen Khachanov, finalist in Adelaide’s first international tournament last week, was beaten in the quarterfinals by Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, 58th, 7-6 (7), 7-5.

In the women’s draw, third-seeded Coco Gauff beat Croatia’s Ana Konjuh 6-3, 6-4 to reach the bottom four.
