Franciscan chooses Dentino as next vice-president of student life | News, Sports, Jobs
STEUBENVILLE – Daniel Dentino has been named the next Vice President of Student Life at the Franciscan University of Steubenville.
Dentino, who will begin his new job on June 21, received his undergraduate degree from Franciscan. He joined his alma mater from Canisius College, where he worked as Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students. During his tenure, he developed a new proactive retention strategy; launched several new engagement opportunities for students, faculty, staff and coaches; in partnership with Academic Affairs on a new first year experience; revised crisis and emergency management protocols; and expanded the intramural and club athletics offerings.
He replaces David Schmiesing in this role. Schmiesing will become the first dean of the university with a personal vocation.
University president Reverend Dave Pivonka, TOR said Dentino’s vast experience in Catholic higher education will be invaluable to the president’s board.
“Dentino has over two decades of experience administering student life at several Catholic colleges and universities and has a proven track record in promoting a campus environment in which students can thrive. “ Pivonka said. “As a former Franciscan himself, he has an insider’s point of view and appreciation for the commitment to academic excellence, continuous conversion, the integration of faith and reason and the a call to a joyful discipleship which makes our educational mission and our student culture unique. I look forward to working with him in this role.
Since 2001, Dentino’s professional career has focused on student service and he has held leadership positions in student life at Bethany College (Kansas), St. Mary’s University (Kansas), London, United Kingdom. Wheeling Jesuit University and Ave Maria University (Florida), where he developed the campus faith, academic, athletic and social culture of the startup.

As Vice President of Student Life, Dentino will provide overall leadership and direction to Student Life programs, which encompass Residence Life, Evangelism and Family Life, Athletics, Wellness Center. being, student activities and programming, catering services, international student services, orientation and campus events.
He will report to the president, be part of the university’s management team and participate in the institution’s strategic planning.
In addition to his BA in Theology from Franciscan University, Dentino holds an MA in Religious Studies from Providence College and a Doctorate in Systematic Theology from Duquesne University, and has taught courses in Theology and Philosophy. at university level for over 20 years.
Dentino wlll takes the reins from Schmiesing, who was vice president of student life for 15 years and will become founding dean of the personal vocations office, reporting to Rev. Jonathan St. Andre, TOR, vice president of Franciscan life. Schmiesing will lead the university’s personal vocation efforts and oversee the career services department, missionary outreach programs, SWOP, and student leadership development programs, including the Center for Leadership.
Originally from Illinois, Dentino is married to Mary (Helgeson), a 2002 Franciscan University graduate. The couple have four children.
