Auchter’s Art: Another audit? | Michigan Radio
I am sometimes asked what my motivations are for drawing editorial cartoons. Am I trying to convince readers to agree with my point of view? Evangelize? Score points ? And the answer is no … most of the time.
I mean, there’s always a little slice of ego that longs to be validated, right? The idea of people reading my cartoons and saying, “You know, before I saw this I had the exact opposite point of view, but now that my eyes have been opened by this man’s scathing and brilliant observations, I completely agree ! Also, my sides burst out laughing. “
No, in reality it is something much less ambitious. More often than not, I am simply expressing a thought and hoping to spark further thoughts. No winning or losing argument. No promotion of a particular ideology. And certainly no conversion.
I am sharing this with you this week in particular because I really have nothing to add to the cartoon itself. I’m in disbelief that anyone would think that an additional audit of the 2020 election here in Michigan would be a good idea (especially by a private company). And I’m just as incredulous as anyone who thinks a 9/11 style commission on the events of January 6 would be a bad idea. Hope that reminds you of that too.
