AGAPE MEAL/SERVICE OF TENEBRAE

1 Apr 2010 - 6:30pm

Pilgrim Congregational Church will be having an Agape Meal at 6:30 P.M. on Thursday, April 1, 2010. The Agape Meal is a simple supper (soup, dried fruit, olives, bread, cheese, grapes, nuts) reminescent of the Last Supper. A reading by the Rev. Dr. Keith Alderman will be presented while guests are eating.
At 7:00 P.M. we will retire to the Sanctuary where a solemn Tenebrae service will be held. The word "Tenebrae" is the Latin word for "darkness" or "Shadows". During the service the gradual extinguishing of candles will occur, leaving only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord. As it gets darker and darker we can reflect on the great emotional and physical pain that was very real for Jesus that evening. Toward the end of the service, the Christ candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil over good.
